my story

Hi! I’m Jenn, and I’m a professional photographer and travel blogger from the beautiful Rocky Mountains in Alberta, Canada. I’m now location-independent, traveling the world with my wonderful husband Mitch, who is also a photographer and a partner in much of my content.

I love the adventure that comes with finding unique photography locations, often hiking or travelling many miles to explore more remote territory. I’m incredibly passionate about inspiring others to expand their own horizons and explore as much of our beautiful world as possible. I hope that my images help to instill a sense wonder and curiosity in others to get out there and seek the places and experiences that make them feel the most alive!

About 5 years ago, I quit my high-stress office job in the digital marketing space and decided to embark on the journey of a lifetime by transitioning to full-time freelance work. Life is just too short to be stuck in a career you don’t love, and I wanted to see more of the world while putting my skills to use on my own terms.

Though becoming a self-employed digital freelancer was indeed a risk, I’ve been loving the freedom that has come with that decision ever since. I’ve had the opportunity to create content for some of my favourite big brands and various tourism boards, and I’ve been able to see so much of this amazing planet because of it.

As a published writer and photographer, I’ve also had my work featured in various print publications, such as Canadian Geographic Magazine, as well as various digital outlets.

becoming a digital nomad

Becoming a digital freelancer was by far one of the best decisions I ever made.

One of the most common questions I receive through my blog or via Instagram is “How did you become a digital nomad?“

I’ve been finding that I’m also passionate about helping others learn how to make a sustainable income on their own by monetizing what they love to do and are good at, (if office life isn’t your thing, either). In today’s day and age, it is more possible than ever to make a living online by monetizing what you already know and love to do, and I’m excited to begin sharing my story with you of how I was able to become a digital freelancer and how you can achieve this freedom in your life, too.

What type of camera do you Use?

I currently shoot with Nikon camera bodies and a mix of Nikon and Sigma ART lenses.

My main camera body is the Nikon D750, and my most-used camera lenses are my Sigma ART 14-24mm f/2.8, Sigma ART 24-70 f/2.8 ART, and my Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3.

How Do You Travel for Free?

Prior to this, I worked professionally in various fields (such as higher education, nonprofit, health and telecom) in digital marketing-focused roles, such as: marketing manager, web developer, and content strategist. I was able to find a way to combine my skillset to create a freelance + consulting business that provides me with the freedom, flexibility, and variety of location I crave in life.

How Do You Travel for Free?

My current business as a freelance photographer, travel blogger, and digital marketing consultant allows me to be location-independent and work from anywhere in the world (well, as long as there’s wifi!) Often, I will partner with tourism boards, hotels and other travel services to provide them with the content deliverables, promotion + marketing services that their business can benefit from in exchange for covering my accommodation, flights, etc. Deliverables can vary depending on the brand’s needs, but often looks like: professional photography for their website, video content for their social media, promotion via my social media channels, or a sponsored blog on my website. Though I love what I do, it definitely did not happen overnight! It consisted of a lot of time, hard work, hustle, research, and plenty of trial and error.

I’ve been working at (and growing in) my passion for photography since I was a teenager. From my love of writing came travel blogging (which first actually started out as a healthy living blog!), and then writing professionally for publications.

Social media came later. Over time (and with a lot of consistency) I was able to grow a following and begin partnering with brands, tourism boards, etc.

What is your favourite place you've traveled?

I always find this question so tricky, as there are so many beautiful places to choose from!

I love Tukey, Bali, Hawaii, Philippines. I love Big Sur in the USA and Baja in Mexico. And the Rocky Mountains in Canada will always be a permanent favorite!
