If you’re planning on finally going on a road trip across California, this year is the perfect time to do it.
To help you decide on what to do and when to go, I compiled a list of some of the best events to watch out for in California in 2019.
Take your pick from these five events happening throughout the year and perhaps even plan your road trip around them!
Los Angeles Mac & Cheese Beer Festival
If you enjoy your comfort food and craft beer, you’re in for a treat. LA Weekly’s article on the Los Angeles Mac & Cheese Beer Festival reveals that attendees will have complimentary access to over 50 featured craft beers. You can then pair those brews with gourmet mac & cheese creations from over a dozen of LA’s top professional chefs, a true ode to arguably the best comfort food in the world. The April event will be spread out across three floors at the Globe Theater in downtown LA, and includes DJs and live bands in the event lineup. A veritable pilgrimage dedicated to everyone’s favorite cheesy snack set to live music.
Cinespia Cemetery Screenings
The famed Hollywood Forever cemetery is the permanent resting place of some of the biggest names in entertainment. And every summer, Cinespia holds outdoor film screenings at the cemetery, showcasing Hollywood cult classics. You’ve definitely never been to an outdoor movie theater like this one before. A strange and quintessentially Californian celebration of life in a place that’s dedicated to death, complete with sleepovers, DJ sets, and dance parties. Bring your own folding chairs, picnic blankets, booze, and snacks for the complete experience. Try not to disturb the ghosts of Rudolph Valentino and Bugsy Siegel while getting to know Hollywood’s film/partying enthusiasts.
Breeders’ Cup Classic
Every year, the Breeders’ Cup Classic switches between some of the finest horse racing tracks in the U.S. including Del Mar, Keeneland, and the Churchill Downs. This November, the world-famous horse race is slated to happen at the Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California, and it is not to be missed. In an article by Ladbrokes they call the Breeders’ Cup “the most prestigious thoroughbred horse race in the United States”. And sure enough, the event attracts its fair share of horses from around the globe. An awesome competition to witness not just for horse racing fanatics, but for anyone who appreciates elite competition at some great outdoor venues.
California Watermelon Festival
Yes, you read that right. There’s a Californian festival dedicated to watermelons. It includes strange events like watermelon skiing (we’ll let you figure that one out), cooking demos, strange costumes and parades, eating contests, and BMX bike shows. While all these are interesting, what you should really watch out for are the fruit carvers who create mind-blowing sculptures out of the celebrated watermelon.
San Diego Comic-Con
The original mecca of nerdhood and geekery, the San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) is gearing up for its 50th convention this year. Notorious for stunning reveals and some of the biggest announcements in the world of entertainment, this year’s SDCC in July is bound to be the site of groundbreaking news in terms of movies, comics, games, television, and online entertainment. Thanks to the vast army of cosplayers that frequent Comic-Con, it also doubles up as the best place to take the perfect selfies with some of your favorite superheroes. Pro tip: If you’re a bonafide geek, stick to your budget. Apart from amazing reveals and panel discussions, the sheer availability of collectible merchandise at Comic-Con also makes it notorious for its ability to separate geeks from their cash. And if you really want to have fun, consider wearing a costume yourself – this is the best time and place to do it.
