How DO You get to Positano?!
There’s no hiding the truth that actually getting to Positano can be a bit of a daunting task! However, I can promise that once you’re there, it’s 110% worth the adventure. Carry on to learn all of the ways you can get yourself to Positano for an amazing vacation on the Amalfi Coast!
Most Amalfi Coast travel guides out there have very confusing information. I’ve decided to write the travel itinerary guide on how to get to Positano that I wish I had access to during my own trip planning! For that reason, I have done my absolute best to make this as concise and transparent for you as possible, including costs, travel durations and ticket booking links where possible.
How to get to Positano by plane:
What is the closest airport to Positano?
Naples International Airport (“Capodichino”) is the closest airport to Positano. The airport is right outside of the city and is well connected to Central Station, which is the point of departure for buses and trains heading for the Amalfi Coast and Positano.
However, many people choose to fly into Rome (“Roma Fiumicino”). Roma Fiumicino is the second closest airport to the Amalfi Coast, and depending upon your city of departure, flights here may be more direct and more affordable for you.
How to get to Positano from Naples:
By Ferry:
There are no direct ferry connections from Naples to Positano. You do, however, have several options if you want to take to the sea and enjoy a ferry ride to Positano!
Ferry from Naples to Positano via Sorrento: You will first need to take a ferry to Sorrento (40min, €13.20 ), then continue on from Sorrento to Positano (40min, €15.00). Ferry schedules are published in advance, usually in May of the same year.
Ferry from Naples to Positano via Capri: You will first need to take a ferry to Capri (50min, €21.50), then continue on from Capri to Positano (30min, €18.80). Ferry schedules are published in advance, usually in May of the same year.

Note: Ferry options are limited from mid-Sept until late April/early May, but the above options should be in effect for early May until early September.
By Train:
You can take the Circumvesuviana Train from Naples to Sorrento (1 hr, €4.50), and then continue on to Positano on the SITA Sorrento – Positano Bus (40min, €10,00).
By Bus:
Positano Shuttle is a bus shuttle that operates a direct service (2.5 hr, €28,00) from Naples (either Capodichino Airport, Naples’ Central Train Station and the Molo Beverello Ferry Port) to Positano.
You can also take the Curreri Viaggi bus from the Naples airport to Sorrento (1.5 hr, €10,00) and then continue on to Positano on the SITA Sorrento – Positano Bus (40min, €10,00).
Curreri Viaggi also offers a van service for 1-3 people (€80,00)
By Car:
If you decide to rent a car and drive, the route will take approximately 1.25 hours. However, be aware that this timeline can get slowed down by traffic often, and that the roads get incredibly narrow and hug the cliffs once you arrive on the Amalfi Coast.
By Private Driver:
A private driver from Naples to Positano should cost roughly around €120. I recommend booking with Positano Drivers.

How to get to Positano from Rome:
By Ferry:
Rome does not have a ferry port. You would need to first get yourself to Naples (see below), and then follow the ferry directions from Naples.
An alternative option is getting yourself to Salerno (see below – train) then taking the ferry from Salerno to Positano (1 hr, €12.00).
By Train:
From the airport, take the Leonardo Express shuttle train (30min, €14.00) to Roma Termini railway station. From here you can catch trains to Naples (1hr to 2.45 hr, €12.65 to €65.00+). There are various options for trains to Naples from Rome, including a fast train (1hr, more expensive) and longer trains (less expensive). Visit Trenitalia’s website and Italia Rail’s website (easier to use but small booking fee) for train schedule and pricing information.
You can also take the train from Rome to Salerno (2 hr, €18.90+), and then continue on to Positano via ferry.
By Bus:
Marozzi operates a bus from Rome Tiburtina bus station to Positano (4.5 hr, €22.00). Explore bus schedules on the Marozzi website.
By Car:
If you decide to rent a car and drive, the fastest route will take approximately 3.5 hours. However, be aware that this timeline can get slowed down by traffic often, and that the roads get incredibly narrow and hug the cliffs once you arrive on the Amalfi Coast.
By Private Driver:
A private driver from Rome to Positano should cost roughly around €400. I recommend booking with Positano Drivers.

Love your blog! This is really helping me get clarity on how to get to positano. I’m pretty sure I will take the option of getting a ferry from Naples to carpi then to Capri to positano. How to do I catch the ferry from the Naples airport? Is it nearby ? Do I have to catch a taxi to the ferries? Thank you so much.
Thanks for your comment and support! When we went from Naples to Capri, we caught a taxi from the Naples airport to the ferry terminal. I believe it was only a 15 minute ride or so. The taxi drivers there drive pretty crazy 🙂
